The Mission of the Hummingbird Society:
Promote the understanding and conservation of hummingbirds
In pursuing its mission, The Hummingbird Society will:
- Develop, implement, and/or support activities to protect hummingbirds, particularly those species which are ranked as threatened with extinction*.
- Develop and implement educational programs to promote greater public understanding and appreciation of hummingbirds—their characteristics and the risks they face—through publications (both printed and electronic), presentations, and events such as festivals.
- Support wildlife art as a means of stimulating awareness and appreciation of hummingbirds and wildlife in general, and of our interconnectedness with them
- Support scientific research as a means of expanding the breadth and depth of knowledge about hummingbirds, through research grants and other means.
- Seek opportunities to collaborate with organizations, individuals, and agencies whose goals and activities align with those of The Hummingbird Society, when doing so will enhance our ability to achieve our mission.
- Seek opportunities to support its local community (Sedona, and the state of Arizona)
* as ranked by BirdLife International to be in any of these three categories: Critically Endangered, Endangered, and Vulnerable. As of the year 2006 evaluation, twenty-eight (28) species of a total of 328 (increased to 329 with the discovery of a new species in 2007) fell in these categories.
