Books

General (adult)

Attracting and Feeding Hummingbirds, by Sheri Williamson (T.F.H. Wild Birds Series); retail list price $7.95. For the beginner or even experienced hummingbird lover, this is superb, although photos are not as good as they might have been. Note: author Williamson is highly respected for her knowledge of US hummingbirds (see below as well).

A Field Guide to the Hummingbirds of North America (Peterson Field Guide), by Sheri Williamson; softback $22.00 retail list price. A thorough look at North American species and how to identify them. Serious birders will especially enjoy this, particularly the range maps.

Hummingbirds of Costa Rica, by Michael and Patricia Fogden. A superb, thorough look at the 40+ species found in Costa Rica (tropical hummingbirds are much more diverse in color and appearance than US species). The images are masterful, and the understanding of hummingbird behavior and biology possessed by this scientific duty will captivate any reader. Retail list price $49.95.

Hummingbird Gardens, by Nancy Newfield and Barbara Nielsen. A must for every gardener wanting to attract hummingbirds with flowers. May not be easy to find but worth the effort. Retail list price $22.00.

Ruby-throated Hummingbird, by Bob Sargent. For the entire Eastern half of the US, this is the only hummer they're likely to see on a regular basis. Sargent tells you from truly hands-on experience: he's banded more of them than anyone else in the world! All your questions about the species are answered here. Retail list price $21.95.

Any of the books by Arnette Heidcamp!!!

Don't forget hummingbird calendars!!!

Children

Hummingbird Nest: A Journal of Poems, by Kristine O'Connell George and Barry Moser; for ages 4-8. Masterful art work describing the author's experience with a nest built in a potted Ficus in her yard. One of the best new hummingbird books of this decade. Retail list price $16.00.

First Flight: A Mother Hummingbird's Story, by Don and Norika Carroll. While this team make think of themselves as photo-illustrators, this book lets you know that they are photographers and storytellers. Documenting a nesting experience on their patio was a riveting experience for them, and it will also do so for the reader. Interesting to adults and children alike. Retail list price $14.95.

Videos

Hummingbirds of the Americas by Dr. Juan Bahamon. A visual feast of US and tropical hummingbird species.

Hooked on Hummingbirds by Thomas Kaminski. A great teaching video by an experienced videographer. Superb music makes watching and learning a total experience. (Also available in a shortened Natural History version of interest to teachers.) $22.95

Amazing Hummingbirds of the U.S., by Charles Melton. A close-up look at US species, with extraordinary footage. Who says hummingbirds can't sing or walk? Quite helpful at learning to identify species and to learn about behavior. $21.95.
