David Salman

David is a 1979 graduate of Colorado State University with a degree in Horticultural Science. He is the founder of Santa Fe Greenhouses (1984-2012) and the High Country Gardens mail order catalog (1993-present). He is currently Chief Horticulturist of High Country Gardens online ornamental plant catalog and owner of Waterwise Gardening LLC, a small wholesale greenhouse and ornamental plant breeding business.

Through thirty plus years of hands-on experience, David has acquired expertise in a wide range of horticultural endeavors including greenhouse production, perennial propagation, ornamental plant seed production, rock gardening, commercial tree farming and xeric landscaping.

David is a specialist, propagating and growing waterwise native and Old World plants and is now devoting much of his time to the breeding and improvement of water-wise, ornamental plants for the Great Plains and Intermountain West. He has been a leading spokesperson/advocate of xeriscaping (waterwise landscaping), use of native plants and planting to feed pollinators through habitat-focused gardening.

Kate and Randy Safford

Randy is a practicing attorney having represented small to medium size businesses for over 45 years.  Randy's tuba expertise keeps him busy playing in several community bands; he also helped to found and has been on the board of a professional musical ensemble, Detroit Chamber Winds and Strings, since its inception in 1982.

Kate, now retired, has spent her career in the Human Resources field, advising employers regarding planned talent acquisition, company downsizing and reorganization, along with specialized training, development, and mentorship of employees. Her love of gardening includes building perennial gardens, specifically species that attract hummingbirds and butterflies.

Both Kate and Randy are supporters of many nonprofits in their own community (Birmingham, MI) and nearby Detroit and are also deeply involved in nurturing their 10 grandchildren.
