Welcome

This page is solely for photographers who may wish to submit photos for the Hummingbird Photo Gallery.

Here is your opportunity, as an artist, to gain exposure for your high-quality hummingbird images while helping The Hummingbird Society to show the beauty and diversity of the hummingbird family. We invite you to tell us about your images by emailing us at ross@hummingbirdsociety.org. Photographers should review the Terms and Conditions of hummingbird image use before approaching us with images for consideration.

Only about half of all photographers who submit images will find their images accepted for the Photo Gallery. In part, that is because at present we are interested primarily in expanding the number of species covered. For another reason, we only rarely accept feeder pictures (even when the feeder is not directly visible), particularly of US species. Being in focus is a necessary but not sufficient basis for a photo being accepted. We are influenced equally by the artistic as well as the photographic merit of an image.

You can now view an Excel spreadsheet tabulating the species currently in the Photo Gallery and the ones we need.  In general, we are looking for photos of species not yet in our photo database (we have currently over 170 of the 329 species), and for better and/or different photos of species already in the database.  Similarly, if we have only the male of a species, we are interested in the female (Be sure of your identification on the females.  It can be quite difficult!)  Nesting photos are always desired, although for common US species such as the Anna's and Ruby-throated, it will take more than an average picture to be considered.

Images can no longer be uploaded directly to this site.  If you have images you would like us to consider, please send us an inquiry by email (same address as above), listing the species of which you have images, and something about yourself and your experience with hummingbird photography. Please do not send images until we have responded, to save time for us both. Please do not send us, ever, large image files without their being first requested, as these can fill our mailboxes to their capacity and create problems for us.
